So, you had an entertaining and enjoyable night. The event was promoted in advance, the location complimented the theme, it ran smoothly and everything was very well planned.
Who was in charge of that great event and how did they put everything together? One day soon, it could be YOU, after you learn all the essentials needed to plan events in public and private sectors.
Durham College offers a distance education certificate program called Event Planning. It is designed to teach the basics of event planning such as advertising and promotion, financial planning and environmental sustainability.
Willy Mastin-Forsythe, morning receptionist for the Continuing Education office, said the Event Planning certificate could be achieved by fulfilling the requirements for the 12 courses in the program. Students are allowed up to five years to complete everything. Once completed, they can apply for their certificate.
If you have already entered the world of event planning, you’re more than welcome to take just a few of the courses to satisfy what you are looking to gain or achieve.
“Many people don’t want to attain a certificate or diploma, they can take just one course. Some people need it [the course] to get into a certain program, some people need it for work, and some for just general interest,” said Mastin-Forsythe.
The classes run approximately three months and in-class schedules are one night a week, while online courses will have different requirements such as being online at specific times during the week. Martin-Forsythe said the cost of the different courses varies, but can generally range from $200 – $500.
Jayne Davis, Program Assistant for Distance Education, said students can enroll for the semester courses, but some of the more popular courses also have monthly intakes. They are the same courses, but they start and end at different times.
Davis explains more about the program and what students can expect.
